An oval pit and slight mounds were visible as an earthwork and pale cropmark on the south facing slopes overlooking the River Otter, immediately below Lower Shaugh Farm, on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016. The pit is roughly 65 by 35 metres in size, with a slight mound or bank visible on its northern edge. A ditch or hollow, circa 12 metres wide extends to the north-west from the pit towards Lower Shaugh Farm for nearly 90 metres. This may be evidence of a former access track or Holloway.
The pit appears to have been bisected by a field boundary, the bank of which can be seen running at least partly into the pit. East of this boundary the rough extent of the pit is depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt. West of the boundary the pit is not marked. The curvilinear relict boundary falls within an area characterised by HLC as medieval enclosure based on strip fields. This might support the interpretation that the pit is evidence of a former quarry or extractive pit, the use of which predated the enclosure of the fields, either in the later medieval or post-medieval period. The pit remains clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data.
