The remains of probable post-medieval to 19th century ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage were visible as low, parallel earthwork banks on aerial photographs of the 1940s, on west facing slopes south of Pugh’s Farm, Monkton.
The earthworks correspond to one of two plots depicted as an orchard south of the farm on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. However, by 1947 the northernmost orchard, at circa ST186029, remained largely planted and earthwork banks could not be identified. The plot recorded here, circa 160 metres south of the farm, had been cleared of trees by 1947 and roughly WNW-ESE aligned banks were identifiable across the southern half of the plot. Banks were not readily identifiable across the northern half of the plot.
The banks cannot be identified on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2014 and the former orchard plot boundary has been removed, and the smaller plot subsumed into a larger field to the north-west. It is probable that the subtle orchard bank earthworks have been levelled.
