Freer, D, 2006, South Down Common, Beer Head, Devon (Report - Geophysical Survey). SDV359552.

A geophysical survey, using magnetometry, was conducted on three discrete areas on South Down Common, Beer Head, Devon. The Three areas of geophysical survey have possibly helped reveal a multi phased relict system of land divisions interspersed with what appear to be clearance cairns or barrows.

Feature 2 (F25)
A curvi-linear set of strong positive anomalies running broadly northeast to southwest would appear to be strongly connected to the remains of a battery (F26) ( 1St Ed 6” 95.3, 1888) that is southwest of the survey plot.

Feature 3 and 4
Both rhomboid shaped features of low positive anomalies again would appear to have a connection with the remains of the battery. These anomalies do not show on the earthwork survey.

Feature 5
This area is much disturbed and reveals a real mix of high and low positive and negative readings. Due to the proximity to Feature F26 it could be the sub-surface rubble remains of this feature.
