Name: | Pit 145 metres south of Petoe Quarry, Dartington |

Summary
An oval pit containing significant quantities of charred cereals was excavated as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. The cereals comprised mainly oats and barley which may represent dredge, a mixed crop which was fairly frequently grown from the early medieval period onwards. This appears to be a dump of harvested material waste in a pit that was dug to receive it.

Site FTC16.08. A lozenge shaped pit was excavated as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. The pit, 0.87 by 2.56 metres and 0.48 metres deep with steep sides contained significant quantities of charred plant remains comprising mixed oats and barley. This appears to have been dredge, a mixed crop which was fairly frequently grown from the early medieval period onwards.

Site 27. Pit at Tigley B, Harberton. A large oval pit the charcoal-rich fill of which contained charred oats, barley and indeterminate grains. A calibrated radiocarbon date of AD566-643 was obtained from a hazelnut shell. This appears to be a dump of burnt, harvested material in a pit especially dug to receive it.
