HER Number:MDV115050
Name:Neolithic Pits to north-east of Moore Farm, Harberton

Summary

A series of features representing a concentration of early prehistoric activity were recorded as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. A Late Neolithic ditch and two/three Late Neolithic pits were recorded together with seven undated ditches and eight other pits which may also be prehistoric in date. The sherds of Late Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery recovered from two of the pits and the gully represent a minumum of ine vessels and five fabrics. Four of the fabrics are local, the fifth represent the first known instance of Lizard gabbroic in a Late Neolithic context in Devon.

Site FTC18.12/18.13. The site comprised a scatter of generally small pits and ditches, some containing Late Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery. Pit 18.12.032, 1.1 by 0.45 metres by 0.18 metres deep, contained 37 sherds of Grooved Ware pottery in gabbroic fabric. Pit 18.12.033, 1 metre diameter and 0.25 metres deep, contained 52 sherds of Grooved Ware and three worked flints. Pit 18.12.053 contained a large amount of hazelnut shell. Curvilinear ditch 18.12.049/055 contained 44 sherds of Grooved Ware. Pit 18.13.004 also contained hazelnut shells.

Site 28. Moore Farm, Harberton. Archaeological features on this site comprised mainly a scatter of small pits with Late Neolithic dating evidence but also a number of undated pits and ditches, one of which returned a Mesolithic radiocarbon date from a hazelnut shell. The Neolithic period is represented by three pits and a curvilinear ditch. Pit 18.12.018 returned a calibrated radiocarbon date of 2860-2579BC from a sample of hazelnut shell which fits with the 58 sherds of Grooved Ware pottery that were also recovered from the fill. Pit 18.12.053 also contained abundant hazelnut shell fragments, one of which returned a calibrated radiocarbon date of 2859-2579BC. The fill of the curvilinear gully contained 44 sherds of Grooved Ware pottery from two separate vessels. In the adjacent plot, pit 18.13.004 was also found to contain frequent wood charcoal and hazelnut shells, suggesting an early prehistoric date. The other undated pits may also belong, by association, to the same period.
The sherds of Grooved Ware represent a minumum of nine vessels and five fabrics. Four of the fabrics are local, the fifth represent the first known instance of Lizard gabbroic in a Late Neolithic context in Devon.
