HER Number:MDV115052
Name:Pit circa 200 metres north of Moore Farm, Harberton

Summary

Circular pit excavated as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline. Cereal grain from the fill of the pit, which was amongst a scatter of earlier prehistoric features, returned a radiocarbon date of AD394-534 suggesting that the pit is late or post Roman. The purpose of the pit is unclear but it may suggest that some of the other undated features on the site are also late or post Roman rather than earlier prehistoric.

Site 28. Pit at Moore Farm, Harberton. Amongst the scatter of earlier prehistoric features was a circular pit (18.12.015), 1.5 metres diameter and 0.38 metres deep. The fill contained carbonised remains including oats, barley and other indeterminate cereal grains and wood charcoal, mainly oak and hazel. A calibrated radiocarbon date of AD394-534 was returned on a sample of cereal grain which places the pit in the late Roman or immediate post-Roman period. The purpose of the pit is unclear but it may suggest that some of the undated features on the site are late or post-Roman rather than earlier Prehistoric in date.
