Site 19. Pit at Bluepost, Harberton. The only feature encountered at this site was a small sub-circular pit (19.07.004), 0.42 metres diameter and 0.1 metres deep. Its charcoal-rich fill contained an assemblage of oats and rye, together with gorse spines, braken fragments and burnt twine. It is suggested that it was a bale of fodder that had been burnt and buried. A sample of rye grain returned a calibrated radiocarbon date of AD1018-1155. The feature does not appear to be related to any settlement. A similar but undated pit (19.08.005) also contained charred remains including gorse but no cereals. The pits appear to relate then to agricultural activities being carried out in the fields.
