Full description

Hughes, S. + Valentin, J., 2008, Land adjacent Langage Energy Park, Plympton, Devon (Report - Evaluation). SDV359573.

An archaeological trench evaluation on land adjacent to Langage Energy Park, Plympton, Devon, (centred at SX 573 561), was undertaken by Exeter Archaeology between February and April 2008. The work comprised the machine excavation of 54 trenches. Trenches were generally excavated to target a series of geophysical anomalies which were thought to represent evidence for later prehistoric to post-medieval settlement and agricultural activity, as well as areas of burning that could relate to industrial processes. The trenches took place over several fields, Fields A to M.

Field A, T2
Trench 2 contained a single N-S aligned linear ditch. The ditch had a shallow 'V' shape profile, thought to be a boundary or drainage ditch. No finds were recovered although its alignment and presence beneath the subsoil, suggests a medieval or earlier date.

Field B, T4
Three linear features present. A single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from one of the ditches.

Field C, T6
A single N-S aligned linear feature was present and had a regular rounded profile. No finds were recovered.

Field D, T8
Two linear features and a possible tree throw. No finds were recovered from any of these features.

The features recorded in Fields A, B, C and D suggest an agricultural boundary or drainage use. One ditch dates to the medieval period and although no finds were recovered from the majority of the features they are likely to be medieval or earlier, rather than modern in date.
