A possible former extractive pit was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from lidar data as an irregularly shaped earthwork pit almost 50 metres in length on the south-east facing slopes to the west of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt Parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and therefore probably predate the 1880s. The earthwork pit falls within and slightly impinges on the earthworks of a relict field system of probable medieval date, and was probably of post-medieval to late 19th century date.
