Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthwork banks do not correspond with a depicted extractive pit or quarry.

The western edge of the earthwork pit remained visible on the partial lidar coverage.

Google, 2015, Google Earth Pro, EARTH.GOOGLE.COM XX-JUN-2006 ACCESSED 01-APR-2002 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359580.

The earthwork pit remained clearly visible as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A roughly rectilinear shallow pit almost 38 by 27 metres in size, probably the remains of a former extractive pit, was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards and partially on digital images derived from lidar data, as an earthwork on the south-east-facing slopes of Dumpdon Hill to the north of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt Parish.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppit or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and the pit therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The pit appears to be overlain by parallel earthwork banks, probably evidence of a later orchard that was established on the site of the earlier extractive pit.
