A roughly circular shallow depression or pit was visible as a slight earthwork and cropmark on the south-facing slopes immediately north-east of Shaugh Farm, Luppitt. The earthwork is on average circa 10 metres in diameter and on aerial photographs of 1947 was be bounded by a pale and narrow cropmark up to nearly 2 metres wide. This might be evidence of a narrow earthwork enclosure bank, perhaps supporting an interpretation of an ornamental feature of possible post-medieval to 19th century date, such as a tree clump. The earthwork does not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, so the removal any such feature must predate circa 1840.
The dark circular cropmark was noted on more recent images available to the survey, but the possible bank was not seen. The pale cropmark could therefore have been evidence of a pronounced soil moisture deficit between the interior of the pit and surrounding area, possibly indicative of a natural feature such as a springhead, rather than a levelled earthwork.
