HER Number:MDV115122
Name:Former Field Boundaries East of Otter View Farm

Summary

Former field boundaries with flanking ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as linear and curvilinear banks and cropmarks of ditches on the south-facing slopes immediately east of Otter View Farm, Luppitt. The banks and ditches were probably evidence of removed field boundaries, of medieval to post-medieval date.

Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any depicted field boundaries.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 F20 2442-2443 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

A linear bank with flanking ditches was visible as an earthwork and cropmarks.

Ordnance Survey, 1982, OS/82218 V, OS/82218 V 1154-1155 28-AUG-1982 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359504.

Linear banks with flanking ditches were visible as earthworks and cropmarks.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Next Perspectives, 2014, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST1803 08-SEP-2014 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359479.

Linear banks with flanking ditches remained visible as slight earthworks and cropmarks.

Bluesky International, 2016, LiDAR DTM data (0.5m resolution) Blackdown Hills and East Devon AONBs: 3 transects, LIDAR ST1702-ST1703 Bluesky International DTM 04-MAY-2016 (Cartographic). SDV359714.

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and possible flanking ditches were visible. Map object based partly on this source.

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks and possible flanking ditches were visible. Map object based partly on this source.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Linear and curvilinear banks with flanking ditches were visible on aerial photographs of 1947 and digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016 as earthworks and cropmarks on the south-facing slopes immediately east of Otter View Farm, Luppitt. The former banks were 3 to 5 metres wide and flanked by narrower ditches.
They did not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map for Luppitt, so the removal any such features must have predated circa 1840. However, the probable former boundaries fell within the field pattern as depicted on the historic map, a system characterised by HLC as of probable medieval origin. The banks and ditches were therefore probably evidence of removed field boundaries potentially of medieval or post-medieval date. A small triangular plot defined by the southernmost boundaries was probably a small orchard, recorded separately.
