Summary

Pottery recovered from the fill of a ditch included sherds from a 14th-15th century wheel-thrown jug and also a 17th century chill, a vessel used for burning fish oil instead of candles. The section of ditch was excavated as part of a programme of archaeological works along the route of a gas pipeline.

Forty one sherds of South Devon micaceous ware came from the fill of ditch 25.01.008. These included 5 sherds from a 16th-18th century chilli and sherds from a 14th-15th century wheel-thrown jug.

Two north-east to south-west orientated ditches containing post medieval pottery.

The stem of a chill in Totnes-type ware came from the fill of ditch 25.01.006. Chills were a distinctive West Country vessel. Fish oil was burnt in the bowl as an alternative to candles. Probably 17th century.
