The site of the well is very overgrown. It has a cast iron manhole cover, 36 inches diameter overall and bearing the name J Materface Honiton. J Materface is recorded as a whitesmith and bell hanger in Honiton from 1841 to 1865. The business was carried on by his descendents into the early 1900s. The location of the well on a parish boundary is considered to be significant. An entry in the Burnett Morris files in the West Country Studies library records that the water was used for eyes.
