Orchard banks of probable post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as a series of linear earthwork banks on aerial photographs of 1948 onwards, to the south of Valentine’s Farm. An orchard is depicted here on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of between the 1880’s-90’s, although by 1948, aerial photographs show that the orchard trees have been completely grubbed up, leaving a series of parallel northwest to southeast aligned earthwork banks, on which the fruit trees were established, visible. These banks occupy two adjacent fields and cover an area of approximately 0.28 hectares of moderate northeast facing slope. The orchards were likely associated with the former farmstead of Gatley Farm which is depicted here on the first Edition OS map, but which has since passed out of use. The orchard banks remain partly visible on digital images captured in 2002.
