An irregularly shaped rectilinear pit approximately 47 by 47 metres in size was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as a cropmark on the west to north-west-facing slopes north of Monkton Down Farm, Upottery Parish. The pit is tentatively interpreted as the remains of a former extractive pit, many of which are recorded in the surrounding area.
The cropmark did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and the pit therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s. The cropmark corresponded with an earthwork pit visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
