A possible shallow oval pit approximately 40 by 20 metres in size was visible on aerial photographs of 2000 as an earthwork on the west to north-west-facing slopes immediately south of Yard Farm, Upottery Parish.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Upottery or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, and might therefore have passed out of use prior to the 1840s. However, the location of the pit is crossed by field boundaries enclosing an orchard on these historic maps. It may be that the pit predated the orchard enclosure; the establishment of orchards on former extractive pits is a recurrent theme noted by the NMP survey. However, it might be more likely that the earthworks were created after the partial removal of the field boundaries after 1947.
