Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted map feature.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 F20 4440-4441 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

The location of the pit was visible as a subtle earthwork and dark cropmark.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST1804 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A roughly oval pit was visible as a shallow earthwork.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The pit is located adjacent to the boundary within a field system characterised as of medieval origin.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A possible former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an oval dark cropmark probably indicative of an area of high moisture, but was most clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an oval earthwork over 50 metres long and almost 40 metres wide.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It falls within the a field pattern characterised as probably medieval in origin, situated in a corner adjacent to the road. It is therefore probable that the pit was in use from the medieval or post-medieval period to some point prior to the 1880s. However, it is possible it dates to an earlier period of mineral extraction.
