A possible former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1982 as an oval earthwork up to circa 31 metres across, on the south-facing slopes of a shallow combe to the south-east of Lower Shelvin, Luppitt parish.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It is therefore probable that the pit passed out of use at some point prior to the 1880s. The pit remains clearly visible on digital images derived from elevation data of 2006 and probably survives as an earthwork.
