The earthworks did not correspond with any depicted pit or quarry.

Two possible former extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of the 1980s and digital images derived from elevation data as earthworks on the north-west-facing slopes of a shallow combe to the south-east of Lower Shelvin, Luppitt parish.
The pits are roughly circular or curvilinear in shape, and measure 20 metres and almost 40 metres across. The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It is therefore probable that the pits passed out of use at some point prior to the 1880s. The pits remain clearly visible on digital images derived from elevation data and probably therefore survive as earthworks
