Three possible former extractive pits of probable post-medieval to 19th century date were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and digital images derived from elevation data as earthworks on the south-facing slopes below Shapcombe Farm, Luppitt parish.
The pits are roughly oval or curvilinear in shape, and measure between 26 metres and 42 metres across. The earthworks did not directly correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It is therefore probable that the pits passed out of use at some point prior to the 1880s. The relict pits did surround a fourth pit, depicted on the historic map and therefore not transcribed by the survey, indicating a possible sequence of extraction or prospection in this location.
The pits remain clearly visible on digital images derived from elevation data and probably therefore survive as earthworks
