Roman coin hoard found in 1921 during digging of foundations for the house "torwood". Hoard of 16 or 21 coins contained in an ironstone receptacle, sent to bm and dated in two parts five coins of various mints dating from 360-375 ad and 11 coins from the treviri mint dated ad388-392.(tda 58). Actual location of the hoard uncertain; radford locates it in "a field two and a half miles nw of honiton;" the bm, in the garden of "phileona" in honiton, but the latter possibly in error (jrs).18 of these coins now in exeter museum. Earliest coin is a siliqua of julius ii. Others include 4 of valens, one of gratian, 2 of valentinian ii, and the latest 5 are of the virtus romanorum type minted at treveri in 392-395. Believed buried about 400 ad.(pearce).
