HER Number:MDV115190
Name:Deserted Settlement south-west of Lower Yartyford, Stockland

Summary

A possible medieval or post-medieval deserted settlement is visible as irregular earthworks bounded by a bank visible on aerial photographs taken in 1996 and visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. Two buildings at ‘Riddles’ to the south may be all that remained by the mid-19th century and probably only one, a possible linhay, was still in use by the end of the century.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Only one of the structures is depicted and seems to be an open fronted building built into the enclosure.

A slight curvilinear earthwork bank is visible, north and west of an area with a very irregular gound surface. A rectangular building, obscured by trees, is indistinctly visible in the enclosure to the south.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2504 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A curvilinear bank is visible on the west and north boundaries of an irregular earthwork mound just to the north of the small enclosure depicted on the historic mapping. Map object partly based on this source.

Next Perspectives, 2014, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST2504 08-SEP-2014 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359479.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Of two rectangular buildings in a small subdivided enclosure depicted and named as 'Riddles' on the Tithe map, only one remains on the late-19th century OS map. It may have been a linhay as its north, east and west sides seem to be built into the enclosure with the south side apparently open fronted. This structure is not visible on the available aerial imagery, although the remains of the other is indistinctly visible on aerial photographs up to 2014. In addition, to the north a low and very irregular earthwork mound is visible on visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and on aerial photographs taken in 1996. This irregular area seems to have been enclosed on the north and west sides by a curvilinear bank, and it is possible that the earthworks are the remains of a former settlement of medieval or post-medieval date, of which only two buildings remained by the mid-19th century.
