Earthwork pits of possible medieval to 19th century extraction pits are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1944 onwards, at Searles. The extraction pits comprise a sub-oval shaped earthwork 60m in length by 37 m in width, with a smaller irregular shaped earthwork 51m in length by 22m in width to the east. The larger of the two is bisected by, and so pre-dates, an historic field boundary depicted on the Parish Tithe Map. This earthwork is also partly depicted on this map and is listed as ‘Pit Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. That to the east appears to abut and so post-date a field boundary and access track depicted on this map. The earthworks are visible on aerial digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014, although appear to have been partly levelled for a depot area.
