An earthwork pit, circa 27 by 70 metres in extent, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. It is interpreted as an extraction pit, probably a marl pit given the ‘Old Marl Pit’ depicted on the late-19th century OS map circa 280 metres to the north-west. This parcel of land was depicted with trees and named ‘Berry’s Orchard’ in the Tithe apportionment, and must therefore have ceased use as an extraction pit before the mid-19th century. Presumably as this area of land was more difficult to cultivate it was used instead for orchard trees. Continuing tree cover has obscured the pit on the available aerial photographs.
