HER Number:MDV115205
Name:Mound, possibly a Barrow, east of Knoll, Stockland

Summary

An earthwork mound, visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, may be related to several 'Berry' field names in this area. It could be the remains of a Bronze Age barrow, but more evidence would be required to confirm this.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Maps and Apportionments (Website). SDV349463.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The field parcel immediately to the west is numbered 152 and is depicted with a kink in its boundary where it intersects with the mound.

Ordnance Survey, 1996, OS/96569, OS/96569 V 082-083 08-MAY-1996 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359324.

A slight mound is just visible, but is not well defined enough to be certain of an anthropological origin.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2504 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A roughly semi-circular earthwork mound is visible at the edge of the field.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A roughly semi-circular earthwork mound, circa 15 by 23 metres, is visible on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, although it is not clearly enough defined to be confidently identified from the available aerial photograph imagery. Numerous of the surrounding field names on the Tithe map include a ‘Berry’ element (see MDV47395) which might suggest ancient earthworks, and it is tempting to draw the conclusion that this mound is referred to in these field names. The curvilinear field boundary immediately to the west of the mound is depicted with a small dog-leg on the Tithe map where it intersects with the northern limit of the mound, perhaps indicating that the mound pre-dated this field boundary. The size of the mound and its location overlooking the lower ground to the south and east could suggest that it is of prehistoric origin, perhaps a Bronze Age barrow, but in the absence of any supplementary evidence interpretation must remain tentative.
