Parallel linear earthwork banks, circa 4 metres in width and in three separate land parcels and orientations, were identified from simple local relief visualisations of lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. Their width and cross-contour alignment are indicative of tree planting banks of post-medieval or 19th century date. Orchard is depicted in only two of the three fields on the Tithe map, and these two are named ‘The Orchard’ and ‘New Orchard’ on the Tithe apportionment. Given the latter, it is possible that the third land parcel, described as ‘meadow’, may have been a former orchard that was replanted just to the north (the ‘New Orchard’). The earthworks in the field used as meadow in the mid-19th century are less well-defined, and this might support an interpretation as an earlier phase of orcharding here. Field 717 appears to have still retained some of its orchard trees in 2014.
