Summary

Two probable chalk extraction pits of post-medieval or 19th-century date are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. They probably supplied a nearly limekiln which had fallen into disuse by the early 20th century.

Two irregular earthwork pits, the largest up to 100 metres in maximum width, are visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. A chalk pit, linked to a limekiln by a curving track, is depicted on the late-19th century mapping within the extent of the larger of the pits. It is likely that the pits supplied the limekiln with materials to make quicklime, and were presumably still functioning in the late-19th century but ceased operation soon after, since both the kiln and the chalk pit are described as ‘old’ on the early-20th century mapping.
