A possible former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the east facing slopes south of Profits Down Farm, Stockland parish. The pit is irregularly sub-rectangular in shape, the main body of the pit measures up to circa 54 metres wide.
The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, which might support the interpretation that the pits had passed out of use prior to the 1840s. However, the arrangement of surrounding field boundaries as depicted on the Tithe Map might support the interpretation that the pit was previously enclosed on all sides. A tapering gulley leads northwards from the pit towards Profits Down Farm, and may be evidence of a former access track to the pit. This gulley also roughly corresponds with a short linear arrangement of trees depicted on the OS First Edition amp, which might indicate that the gulley could also be evidence of, or run alongside, a former field boundary.
