A possible former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the south-east facing slopes west of Hornshayes Farm, Stockland parish. The pit is irregularly oval in shape, measuring up to circa 86 metres long and circa 50 metres wide. The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The pit did largely fall within plots depicted on the 19th century maps as orchards. The extractive use of the pits had therefore probably ceased prior to the 1840s and the possibly otherwise agriculturally marginal land was probably reused as orchards. This pattern of reuse is repeated throughout the survey area. The pit is just discernible as a cropmark on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2010, on which the land has been replanted as an orchard, and probably survives as a subtle earthwork.
