  • ORCHARD (Post Medieval to XIX - 1540 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Maps and Apportionments (Website). SDV349463.

The plots (1355, 1356, 1357) were not depicted as an orchard, and were listed as arable on the apportionment.

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Maps and Apportionments (Website). SDV349463.

The plot was not depicted as an orchard, although many neighbouring plots were.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1974, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 RS 4308-4309 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV356127.

Earthwork banks or ridges were visible across the field. A former field boundary, as depicted on the Tithe Map, remained visible as a very slightly higher earthwork bank but was not transcribed by the survey.

Next Perspectives, 2014, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST22004 08-SEP-2014 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359479.

The earthwork banks were not identifiable. The former field boundary, as depicted on the Tithe Map, remained visible as a very slight earthwork bank.

The remains of ridges or low banks of probable post-medieval to 19h century date were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low, parallel earthwork banks on the east facing slopes above Lower Brimpit Farm, Stockland. The ridges covered an area of almost 0.6 hectares and were spaced on average circa 5 metres apart. They were aligned cross-contour roughly ENE-WSW, probably to improve drainage.
The earthworks resemble banks made to improve drainage for orchard planting, as recorded by NMP surveys elsewhere in Devon, but the plots are listed as arable landuse on the Tithe Apportionment for Stockland. Many of the surrounding plots remain depicted as orchards on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and it is possible that the pots recorded here were previously cultivated as orchards, but that their landuse changed prior to circa 1840 for agricultural rotation purposes. Although a former field boundary, as depicted on the Tithe Map, remains visible as a very slight earthwork bank, the lower possible orchard banks cannot be seen as earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014 and have probably been much reduced in height.
