An irregular earthwork pit, following a roughly linear alignment up to 275 metres in length, is visible on aerial photographs taken from 1947 onwards and on images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014. A limekiln and chalk pits, ‘old’ and current, were depicted on the late-19th century mapping within the extent of the larger of the pit, but by the early-20th century all were marked as ‘old’. It is likely that the pits supplied the limekilns with materials to make quicklime, and that parts were still in operation in the late-19th century. The multiple limekilns suggest that this industrial activity may have been based on land ownership, with a pit and a limekiln in each of the adjacent field parcels, although there were probably also consecutive phases of activity.
