A bank defined enclosure of possible medieval date was visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the east facing slopes overlooking Quantock Common, Stockland parish. The bank measures up to circa 3 metres wide and encloses an area roughly 80 metres square.
The earthwork appears to be aligned upon a north-south field boundary depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The earthwork bank is of a much more irregular character than this regular 19th century boundary, which is not depicted on the Tithe map for Stockland and was therefore made after circa 1840, probably to enclose plots associated with the former North Common Cottage.
The bank defined enclosure is also not depicted on the Tithe map for Stockland, but is interpreted as having passed out of use by the mid-19th century. The function of the enclosure is unknown. The bank remains visible as slight earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014.
