A possible former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork up to 60 metres across on the south-west facing slopes to the south of Groundhead Road, Millhayes, Stockland parish.
The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The pit fell within a plot depicted on the 19th century maps as an orchard. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased prior to the 1840s and the plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land, was probably reused as an orchard. This pattern of reuse is repeated throughout the survey area. The pit probably survives as an earthwork.
