A large irregularly shaped pit up to circa 60 metres across was visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the north facing slopes to the north of Heathstock, Stockland parish. The pit was probably a former extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased prior to the 1840s. The pit remained clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
