Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any depicted pits or quarries.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The pits do not correspond with any depicted map object.

Royal Air Force, 1947, RAF/CPE/UK/1995, RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2434-2435 11-APR-1947 (Aerial Photograph). SDV354842.

The pit is partly visible as an earthwork to the north-west of a small copse, which obscures the majority of the earthwork.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2302 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

An oval earthwork pit was visible.

Next Perspectives, 2010, Aerial Photography for Great Britain, Next Perspectives APGB Imagery ST2302 23-MAY-2010 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359317.

The pit is partly visible as an earthwork to the north-west of a small copse, which obscures the majority of the earthwork.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible in part on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards, but most clearly on digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on the south-east facing slopes south of Rull Farm, Stockland.
The earthworks are roughly oval in shape, measuring approximately 65 metres long and 35 metres wide. The earthwork did not correspond with any explicitly depicted pit or quarry on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, but does match an area partly depicted on the Tithe Map as rough ground. This area remains obscured from view by dense tree cover. This might support the interpretation that although the extractive use of the pit had probably ceased prior to the 1840s, the pit earthworks remained as a notable landscape feature and obstruction to cultivation into the late 19th century.
The pit remains most clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
