Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthwork did not correspond with any depicted pit or quarry.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthwork did not correspond with any depicted pit or quarry.

Ordnance Survey, 1996, OS/96569, OS/96569 V 97-98 08-MAY-1996 (Aerial Photograph). SDV359324.

A large earthwork hollow or pit was visible as cropmark and earthwork.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2402 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

A roughly triangular earthwork pit was visible.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The pit falls within a fields system probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the middle ages.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

A former extractive pit potentially of medieval date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1980s and 1990s and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on the east-facing slopes overlooking the Corry Brook, south-west of Rose Farm, Stockland.
The earthwork is irregular in shape, measuring approximately 125 metres long and circa 60 across at the widest point. The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map. It fell within the extant field pattern that had been characterised as probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the medieval period, but may have extended beyond these original bounds during the medieval period; the field boundary to the west diverts from a curvilinear course to follow the limit of the pit and a relict curvilinear boundary is visible as a low bank crossing the north-east end of the pit. This might support the interpretation that the extractive pit had ceased to be used in the medieval period.
The pit was most clearly visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014, and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
