A former extractive pit of probable medieval or post-medieval date was visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on the south-west-facing slopes overlooking the Corry Brook, south-east of Penny Hill Farm, Stockland.
The earthwork was irregularly rectilinear in shape, measuring approximately 37 by 15 metres in size. The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, which supports the interpretation that use of the extractive pit had ceased by the 1840s at the latest.
The earthwork fell within areas depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Stockland parish. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as or incorporated into an orchard. This pattern of land reuse is repeated throughout the survey area. The orchard was cleared of trees by 1947.
The earthwork remained clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
