A former extractive pit of possible medieval to 19th century date was visible on digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork under Devil’s Copse, on the east-facing slopes south of Higher Corrie Farm, Stockland. The earthwork is irregular in shape and measures almost 140 metres long and nearly 50 metres wide.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry explicitly depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland, but does match an area depicted as rough ground or scrub vegetation. This area is marked on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map as small area of woodland named Devil’s Copse. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as, or incorporated into an area of coppice.
The coppice remained densely planted with trees and 2014 but the earthwork was clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
