Former extensive extractive pits of possible medieval to 19th century date were visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards and on digital images derived from lidar data, on the north-facing slopes west of Brimblecombe Farm, Dalwood parish.
The earthworks were irregularly shaped, covering an area of nearly 0.9 hectares, abutting the west of the farmstead. The earthworks did not correspond with any pits or quarries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, which supports the interpretation that use of the extractive pit had ceased by the 1840s at the latest.
The earthworks fell within an area depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Dalwood parish, plot 570 named as Pit Orchard on the apportionment, and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as or incorporated into an orchard.
The orchard has now been largely cleared of trees but the earthworks remain most clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
