The visible earthwork does not correspond with any depicted pit. It does fall within a small orchard enclosure.

A possible former extractive pit of probable medieval to post-medieval date was visible as an earthwork on digital images derived from lidar data on the north-east-facing slopes of Hawley Bottom, Dalwood parish.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s. However, the earthworks fell within a small enclosure depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as or incorporated into an orchard.
The plot remains obscured by trees but the earthworks remain clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
