This area was probably first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later middle ages. The curving form of the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Two curvilinear banks 5 to 6 metres wide, flanked by narrower ditches on their north-eastern sides were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as slight earthworks and cropmarks on the north-east facing slopes south of Dalwood Primary School.
The banks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Dalwood and were therefore probably removed prior to the 1840s. They fall within a field pattern characterised as probably first enclosed with hedge banks based on earlier strip field cultivation in the later medieval period. The relict banks have therefore been interpreted as probably the remains of field boundaries of medieval date. The banks remain clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
