The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the south-west facing slopes on the eastern edge of Dalwood village.
The banks extended over an area of approximately 0.3 hectares and were spaced up to approximately 5 metres apart. They were visible on two alignments, both oblique to the contours to a greater or lesser degree, presumably to aid drainage. They fell within an area depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage.
By 1947 the orchard had been cleared of trees revealing the underlying earthwork banks across much but not all of the orchard plot. The orchard has now been entirely redeveloped for housing and the banks have probably been levelled.
