The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century were visible on digital images derived from lidar data as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the east facing slopes south of Langlands Cross, Stockland.
The visible banks extended over an area of less than 0.6 hectares and were spaced approximately 6 metres apart. They fell within a plot that was not depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map or Tithe Map for Stockland, but the earthworks closely resembled banks recorded on many plots in the area interpreted as having been made for improved orchard drainage. The banks were aligned obliquely cross contour, presumably to aid drainage, which might support this interpretation. The banks might therefore be evidence of a former orchard that was cleared prior to circa 1840.
