A former extractive pit of possible medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data as an earthwork on the north-east-facing slopes adjacent to Ford Farm.
The earthwork was irregularly shaped, measuring approximately 55 by 30 metres in size. The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, which supports the interpretation that use of the extractive pit had ceased by the 1840s at the latest.
The earthwork fell within areas depicted as an orchard on the Tithe Map for Stockland parish and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as or incorporated into an orchard.
By 1947 the tree density within the orchard was very low revealing the pit earthworks. By 1982 the pit had been cleared of trees but the earthwork was most clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014 and therefore probably survives as an earthwork.
