The remains of ridges, probably made for tree planting or improved drainage from the post-medieval period to 20th century were visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s and more recently over a reduced area on digital images derived from lidar data as low and narrow parallel earthwork banks on the west facing slopes at Heathstock Farm, Stockland.
The banks were spaced up to approximately 6 metres apart fell within a larger plot of up to circa 0.3 hectares depicted as an orchard on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and are therefore interpreted as ridges made for fruit tree planting and improved orchard drainage. The orchard survived at nearly the earlier larger size with minimal encroachment from farm buildings until 1947, by which time the tree density within the orchard was low revealing the underlying earthwork banks across the orchard plot. Farmyard expansion and development of part of the site for residential use has reduced the area of surviving visible banks to an area of nearly 0.1 hectares.
