A possible former extractive pit of probable medieval to post-medieval date was visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data on the north-east-facing slopes of a combe east of Shore Bottom, Stockland parish.
The earthwork did not correspond with any pit or quarry depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map and had therefore probably passed out of use prior to the 1840s. However, the earthworks fell within a plot depicted as an orchard on the 19th century maps. The extractive use of the pit had therefore probably ceased some time prior to the 1840s, possibly in the medieval or post-medieval period. The plot, possibly subsequently viewed as agriculturally marginal land was probably then reused as or incorporated into an orchard.
The earthworks remain clearly visible on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014 and lidar data captured between 1998 and 2014.
