Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • FIELD BOUNDARY (Early Medieval to XIX - 1066 AD to 1840 AD (Between))

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The visible earthworks correspond only in part with depicted boundaries, but do abut the depicted field pattern at notable points, such as corners or doglegs, and significant curvilinear lengths echo the surrounding medieval pattern.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), LIDAR ST2303 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 30-SEP-2014 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Curvilinear and linear boundaries remained clearly visible as earthwork banks.

Environment Agency, 1998-2014, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution), RAF/CPE/UK/1974 FS 2434-2435 11-APR-1947 (Cartographic). SDV359177.

Curvilinear and linear boundaries were visible as slight earthworks and cropmarks.

Turner, S.C., 2005 - 2006, Devon Historic Landscape Characterisation Mapping (Cartographic). SDV349122.

The visible earthwork banks fell within areas either first enclosed with hedge-banks during the later medieval period, or areas based on medieval fields but that were substantially re-organised in the post-medieval period. The curving form of some the hedge-banks suggests that earlier it may have been farmed as open strip-fields.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S. + Sims, R., 2016-2018, The Blackdown Hills AONB and East Devon River Catchments National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV359463.

Curvilinear earthwork banks to the north and north-west of Lower Rodway Farm, Stockland parish, were visible on aerial photographs and digital images derived from lidar data. The earthworks largely do not correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland parish, but do abut depicted boundaries and fall within the overall field pattern, which has been characterised by HLC as enclosure of later medieval date or enclosure of post-medieval date but based on medieval fields.
As such the earthworks have been interpreted as former field boundaries of probable medieval that had been removed or passed out of use by 1840.
