A former extractive pit of probable post-medieval to 19th century date was visible on aerial photographs of 1947 as an enclosed area of irregular earthworks on the south-west facing slopes west of the road between Ridge Cross and Larkshayes Cross, Stockland parish, abutting the road to the east and a field boundary to the south. The enclosed area was depicted on the Tithe Map for Stockland and the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map and was therefore not transcribed by the survey. The enclosed area, plot 1751 on the Tithe Map, was annotated and listed on the apportionments as ‘Public sand pit’. The plot is depicted as rough ground on the OS First Edition map and might therefore have passed out of use by this date, although it appears to remain open to the road to the east and accessed by a footpath.
Digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2014 reveal that the enclosure banks have been removed and with the enclosed earthworks, almost completely levelled. The location of the former field boundaries remained visible as slight cropmarks.
