Extraction pits of likely post-medieval to 19th century date are visible as a number of earthwork pits on aerial photographs of 1947 onwards, to the northeast of Stentwood Farm, Dunkeswell. The six adjacent earthworks are sub-oval and irregular in shape and range from between 33m to 97m in length and between 20m to 45m in width. The earthworks are partly defined as areas of woodland on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map, with the southern of these labelled as ‘Seven acre pit’. The woodland likely developed following the disuse of the extraction pits. The extraction pits are located in an area where numerous similar such features have been recorded as part of this survey, with a number of clay pits also depicted within the vicinity here on the First Edition OS map. Aerial photographs show the earthworks are largely obscured by tree cover, although are clearly visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured in 2016.
